BLOG ENTRY #2
Sunday, July 11

Hi everyone,

This first half of summer has been a whirlwind of travel, friends, working out, and skating. After our season ended in North Dakota last season, we had about two weeks off from everything, except school of course, to try to let the body recover and give our minds sometime to relax. After our two-week break, we got right back into lifting and conditioning. Our daily schedule consisted of class in the morning; arrive at the rink about 2:45, SAQ (speed, agility, quickness) or sprint work, then lift finally leaving the rink about 6pm. The team worked very hard which was good to see after a very disappointing season.

On May 1st, with school done for the semester, everyone was free to go on their way home. With me living in Frankenmuth, I had a nice eight hour drive home. The next seven weeks can be pretty much summed up as:

6:00 am – Wake up
6:30 am – Workout
9:00 am – Eat breakfast
11:00 am - leave for Detroit
1:00 pm - Skate with goalie coach
5:00 pm – Arrive home/eat dinner
9:00-10:00pm - Go to sleep

I tried to hang-out with my friends as much as I could on Friday nights and weekends but with the rigors of training it’s sometimes hard to have a social life.

Bringing us up to the past two weeks, which I spent working with Eli Wilson and Bob Essensa from World Pro Goalie School. Jeff Glass, goaltender for the Binghamton Senators, was also there and it was a great experience being able to pick his brain on everything from goaltending to life in the pros. We were on the ice twice a day and also had 1.5 hours of dry land or yoga daily.

Working with Eli and Bob was a great experience and I am planning on doing more with them in the future. We really worked on simplifying my game and eliminating any excess movements and try to keep things as simple as possible. The biggest thing in goaltending is to be able to get into position quickly, get set, and be ready for the shot. If you are still moving into position when the shot is coming it is a lot tougher to make the save.

Finally, I arrived back up in Houghton on June 27th to start getting ready with the team for the season. I am taking a summer class and I am working out, and skating with the other 12 guys that are in town right now. The hard work is showing off this summer as I have gone from being able to squat 225 eight times at the beginning of the summer, to just recently testing at 255 ten times. Hopefully all this hard work will help everyone being bigger, faster, and stronger as the season starts come October.
